How to Change Your Car Oil
As you cruise around Amherst, Manchester, and Derry, it’s important to remember to complete routine maintenance as needed. One task your car will need done frequently in order to help preserve the engine and its overall performance is changing the oil. How often you should change your oil depends on an array of factors. Regardless, when the time comes, it’s important to have the oil flushed and replaced.
To aid in your oil change efforts, our team here at Ira Toyota of Manchester has made this handy guide on how to change oil. We’ll walk you through the whole process of changing the engine’s oil, so read ahead to get started!
Step 1: Locate Drain Plug
You’ll have to either crawl underneath your car or use a jack to prop your vehicle up and find the drain plug. The plug is located under the oil pan that’s at the bottom of the engine.
Step 2: Put a Container Underneath the Drain Plug
This container is placed there to catch the old oil that you’ll be draining out of the car.
Step 3: Open the Drain Plug
Unscrew the oil drain plug; let the oil flush out of your engine and into the container you placed underneath the car.
Step 4: Empty the Oil Filter
At the top of your engine, you’ll want to carefully unscrew the filter and empty it into the drain pan you’re using. You can then place the old filter to the side.
Step 5: Install New Filter
Use a little bit of oil to moisten the gasket on the top of the new filter, then go ahead and securely screw the new filter into the engine.
Step 6: Replace the Drain Plug
Put on the new oil drain plug; make sure it’s completely tight by using an adjustable wrench.
Step 7: Start Pouring in New Oil
Using a funnel, slowly pour the new oil into the filler hole. You can fill it up until there’s about a quart of new oil left.
Step 8: Run Engine
Put on the oil filler cap and start your engine. Let it run for about a minute and check to make sure there are no leaks coming from your car.
Step 9: Check Oil Level
Shut off the engine and wait about 5-10 minutes for the oil to settle. Once it does, you can check to see where the oil level is. Do this by removing the dipstick, wiping it clean, putting it back in, then removing it again and checking its level.
Step 10: Add More Oil if Needed
Depending on where your oil level is, you’ll want to add a little bit of oil at a time until you reach the “full” line that is marked on the dipstick.
