The first thing to know when it comes to learning how to change a car battery is where to find it. While there are vehicles that store the battery in the trunk, it’s likely that the battery for your car is situated under the hood.
To safely change a car battery, the next thing you need to do is make sure the vehicle is in park and shut off. If it has recently been driven, be sure to wait long enough for the engine to completely cool down.
There are two cables connected to the battery. When removing them, be sure to wear work gloves and protective glasses. The negative cable is black and designated by a minus sign. The plus sign marks the red positive cable. The negative cable is always the one to be taken off first. Use a wrench to loosen the connector attached to each terminal.
There will either be a metal clamp or a metal bar keeping the battery in place. In either case, simply loosen and remove the bolt that secures either device. Now, you can easily lift the battery out. Remember to make sure the battery remains upright to avoid disrupting the caustic liquid stored inside.
Now that the battery tray is empty, it’s a good idea to take the time to clean it and the terminal connectors. Use battery cleaner along with a wire brush. While you’re cleaning everything, check to see that the cables and connectors are in good condition. Make sure everything is dry before moving on.
Place the new battery on the tray and use the bolt to re-attach the clamp or bar. Then, connect the positive cable, ensure the connector is pressed as far as it can go onto the terminal, and tighten the bolt. Do the same for the negative side. When you close the hood and start the car, the engine should start immediately.
